Considering all the polluting vehicles, belching smokestacks, manufacturing and agricultural chemicals turned loose in the atmosphere, outdoor air is no bargain. But bad outdoor air gets treated by occasional cleansing rains and dispersing winds.
Not so indoor air. Contaminants including formaldehyde and polychlorinated biphenyls
(PCBs) build up over time and stay there. They come from the stuff in our homes, including wood products, fabrics, furniture, paints and sealants, plus other chemicals from pesticides, candles and cleaning products. Biological sources include bacteria, molds, mildew, viruses, pet dander, dust mites and pollen.
UV Lights Offer Great Protection Two Ways
One of the best ways to clean up the air in your home is with a UV light system (ultraviolet light) that can be added to your central air conditioning and heating system. Ultraviolet lights work with air filtration equipment
, not in place of it.
Commonly used in public buildings such as offices, hospitals, schools and restaurants, ultraviolet lights attack and neutralize most contaminants in your the air and on surfaces in your home.
There are two basic ways UV lights work in central HVAC systems. One is to cleanse the air as it passes through the HVAC system, and then distribute it throughout your home. The technician places the UV light source in the air handler or the air return. Sometimes UV lights are installed in the cooling coils of the air conditioning equipment to kill mold and mildew that can gather and grow in the moist conditions there.
The other method uses a new technology that treats every cubic foot of indoor air simultaneously, throughout the house. The photo above shows the Guardian Air HVAC cell with REME technology, which attacks all types of contaminants, reduces particulates and leaves air smelling fresh and clean.
REME is short for Reflective Electro Magnetic Energy. The unit creates ionized hydrogen peroxide molecules that disperse throughout your home, whether the fan is operating or not. This air purifying plasma, made of oxygen and humidity, kills harmful contaminants in the air and on all surfaces in your home. It has been documented to stop 98% of the germs in a sneeze before they can travel three feet!
The ionization also attracts suspended particulates in the air, such as mites, dust and pet dander, drawing them together to form bigger (but mostly not visible to humans) masses that can be trapped easier by the home’s air filtration system.
